    Spring 2011 Fashion Trends

What’s up fashionistas? How have you all been doing? I hope you all had an amazing Christmas. Anyways, isn’t it crazy how this year is coming to an end really soon? And before we know it, it’s already 2011 and spring is just right around the corner. Almost time to store away our heavy coats & jackets and time to bust out and revisit our lace patterned dresses & bell bottom pants.

This spring 2011, fashion focuses  & revisits that old 70’s glamour, along with the edgy biker & punk clothing & yet of course the 60’s lady like silhouettes.

Here are a few “not so new”  fashion trends for this coming spring season.

1.) LACE: You’re probably wondering, well lace isn’t a new trend since this was also from 2010. But, trends especially when it comes to fashion have this revolving cycle. And some trends may have a much longer span than others and lace is just one of those. The ultimate balance of lace in 2010 / 2011 is to be romantic but not over-girly; sensual but not over-suggestive. Like taking beautifully crafted lace that would have once been part of a garment and making it the only layer. The lace isn't an added detail of a garment, it is the garment. And thus we come to lace skirts and lace dresses. Dare to wear them without a slip underneath. Just keep the cut a little more relaxed or the hem a little longer to maintain that aforementioned balance.

2.) TASSELS: Tassels are a symbol of luxury and this coming spring, tassels are a huge hit. Yes! When you think of tassels you probably think of furniture/ interior trimmings etc. But, now, in a time of global instability and flux, we return to luxury. But as we see it, luxury as craftsmanship. It may be in the minimal yet beautifully crafted aesthetic that's prominent right now, or it may be in a little ornament, the tassel, that carries connotations of opulence - but that sits well and truly on the opposite side of glitzy. So when it comes to investing in pieces with tassel detailing, quality is key: a well-made tassel, be it silk or leather carries that sense of luxury and authenticity.

3.)   BELL BOTTOMS: Are flares & bell bottoms back in? The simple answer is yes, flared jeans and bell bottoms (as well as wide-leg pants to an extent, but we'll save those for another day) are back in. The reason why is almost as simple: skinny jeans have become so common, such a staple in most everyone's wardrobe, that people are seeking an alternative. At the same time you have the rise re-rise of 1970s fashion as a major influencer of trends across 2011.

4.)   CROP TOPS: As a 2011 fashion trend, the crop top is not just about exposing one's whole stomach, but about finding elegant new ways of showing a peep of toned midriff. Yes there's the crop top of the grunge-revival. Yes there's the crop top of the sportswear-as-daywear trend. But there's also the crop top as a sophisticated, refined piece that some will embrace as a look not to be feared.

Enjoy & remember, don’t be afraid of fashion, because there’s always something for everyone. Fashion is not only evolutionary, but it also reoccurs.

May you all have a Happy New Year!

Fall 2010 Color & Fashion Trends

What’s up fashionistas! Sorry for the long hiatus, I’ve been nothing but busy with school and personally life. Did you guys miss me?  Hehe! Anyways, hope you all are doing well. Isn’t it crazy how it’s already Fall season? Are you guys fashion ready? If yes, then great! But if not, here are some Fashion tips.

Turtle necks are very in fashion this season. It’s metro-chic & keeps your neck warm, so what more could you ask for right? Also, layering is a huge thing this season. Don’t be afraid of to use different fabrics with different textures. This season, is all about the FEEL!

Capes & Panchos are a definite in this Falll 2010. Not only are they stylish but gives you that “comfy- bummin’ on your couch” feel/ look. It gives you this very sophisticated and elegant look, although, some may beg to differ. Some may think it looks strange, but what is fashion if you’re afraid to try new things right?

Big Pants or large trousers are quickly gaining its popularity through the masses. Some of you may look at these images & immediately think of Katherin Hepburn yet some will think, a modern MC Hammer perhaps? Nonetheless, these big beautiful pants will rock your reality runway. Can anyone say Femme Fetal? Yes, these enormous looking trousers definitely make a category of its own.

As for Fall 2010 color trends, check these amazing jewel toned colors.

According to Pantone.com, “Everything old is new & improved” and while looking at these colors it brings you back to the good ole’ byzantine, retro & hippy days. A bit nostalgic isn’t it?

Anyways, hope this helps you guys get ready for this season!

Also, I recently made a Facebook Fan Page, so if you guys have any questions, please feel free to directly message me or ask me questions on the Mode-5 Formspring. Fashion 101

Hey there fashionistas, its Nikki here! I know, it’s been a while hasn’t it? And you’re probably wondering what took me so long to write my next blog. Anyways, need not worry because I’m back J

Ok, so you’re probably wondering, “What is she going to write about this time?” Well, that’s actually a pretty good question because today’s blog topic is Fashion 101.

Fashion 101 eh? Yes, you read it right! As some of you guys might know or not know, I’m actually a Fashion major student, so I’m currently taking fashion related classes & so today I decided to take all of you with me for a little Fashion class 101.

As consumers, we tend to become more conscious and attentive to what we buy. May it be with the packaging, quality, design, color and whatever else we tend to observe.  However, some of us don’t really know what goes on in the “fashion world.” I mean, aside from following (or not) the trends, we don’t really know much about anything else, like how fast trends change or the difference between a trend & a fad or what’s a classic look and what isn’t?

So for starters, here are some terminologies & examples that you need to know, if you didn’t know already ;)

Trend: A direction on which fashion is moving. (how fast/slow & where it’s heading)

    • Who sets these so called “Fashion Trends?”

    -           Individuals (like you) then the Designers & Fashion magazine editors find their inspiration on that. (like I said on my previous post, “fashion is evolutionary, not revolutionary” meaning fashion is just like a huge circle. Over time, we find our inspiration through something that has already been done & just reuse it.)

Fad: A style that suddenly sweeps into popularity but disappears quickly as it arrives.

    1.) BUMPITS

(To be honest, I have purchased & used these. However, it’s a complete fail for me. No one beats the good ol’ teasing & hair spray if you really want that nice voluminous bump)

    2.) BARE-MIDRIFF/ BRITNEY SPEARS

(I’m not a hater, it’s just my opinion)

Classic: A style that remains in general fashion for an extended period of time.

    1.) CHANEL SUITS

    Before

    After

(Chanel is one of my favorite designers, because she has made her suits like her signature. From then till now, women are still wearing Chanel suits/ Chanel-inspired suits which I believe show both femininity & female empowerment.)

    2.) RED LIPSTICK

    Before

    After

(From Marilyn Monroe to Gwen Stefani, a red lipstick just screams CLASSIC!)

Regardless whether we know these or not, it is still important that we stick to our own sense of fashion because neither a fashion magazine nor a celebrity can dictate you on how you should look like. I believe that each of us have our own personal taste when it comes to fashion.

Aside from this post, I would also like to address my sincere gratitude to those who have read and supported both my Mode-5 blogs & my personal fashion blog. Also, I would like to thank those who have emailed us some questions-- Here are my answers:

    1.       Karen T: Thank you for the suggestions, but I have a question about the Evian. Is it a setting spray, or water?

    -          The Evian Facial Spray is a multipurpose spray that can be used as a setting spray, toner, facial mist, etc.

    2.       Angel P: is there anyway to disguise cellulite if you want to go to like the beach?

    -          It really depends where the cellulite is located. But you can try to draw attention on the different parts of your body so people would concentrate on that rather than the cellulite. Also, by using a tanning lotion or some sort, it can give an illusion of a more toned & slimmer look. However, these are just temporary! If you want to get rid of cellulite all in all, you must try to exercise & eat healthily.

    3.       Sienna: I cant wear bright lipstick, it gets on my teeth and looks messy. how do i prevent that, thank you.

    -          I understand that not all lipstick shades may match our skin tone, but don’t be scared to try because you’ll never know, some may work for you & some shades may not. I think the safest shade to try is maybe a coral one because it’s not too bright or too dark & it still screams out SUMMER! Also, you might want to avoid pearl or frost finish lipsticks because they tend to bleed around your lips, making it messy. So, the safest way to go about it might be a matte finish, coral shade lipstick J And lastly, here’s a little trick that I want to share with you to prevent lipstick from getting on your teeth. (Instead of heavily applying the lipstick, try a dabbing application instead. – you can even control the amount you want on your lips. After putting on the lipstick, make a “kissy” face & stick your index finger in your mouth about half way then gently pull it out. By doing so, the excess lipstick that’s supposed to go on your teeth, then goes on your index finger)

Thank you for all your questions! I enjoyed answering each one of them with the best of my abilities. So, if any of you have questions, suggestions, concerns or requests pertaining to fashion, beauty, makeup or my blog posts, please feel free to ask me in my Mode-5 formspring: http://www.formspring.me/NikkiMode5. I will make sure to answer your questions/ requests as soon as I can. ^_^

2010 Summer Fashion and Beauty Tips

What are some things you love about summer? Well for me, it’s definitely not the heat, or the beach, or getting tanned. So you’re probably like, “then what is it that you like about summer, Nikki?”  Well, my answer for that is very simple, IT’S THE FASHION!

Although, I may not like summer itself, I do love the summer fashion. Not only does summer have vibrant and bold colors, but anyone can practically get away with going out somewhere in shorts, a plain v-neck shirt and some nice flats. (Wait, sounds like I’m describing myself?? Just kidding!)

Spring & Summer fashions are in a way similar yet different in a few things or two. Spring fashion is very delicate, as I would like to call it. When I think of spring I think of pastels, floral patterns, dresses and the Easter bunny. However, when I think of summer, I immediately think of bold colors, beachy waves (hair), floral patterned rompers & skorts (skirt-shorts), and of course, who can forget about flip-flops/ sandals (slippers as some Hawaiians would call it.)

Even though I have mentioned earlier that anyone can practically get away with wearing anything in the summer time, there are still some fashion rules to follow, not just with fashion but also when it comes to make up, etc.

Here are my top five fashion & beauty tips for summer time:

1.)    Since its summer time, we all want to bust out our legs and just show them off. However, it’s not too flattering for you or the people around you, if you wear some hot pants with some cellulite. So one thing we can do before summer comes right around the corner is maybe do some leg work/ exercises to tone down our legs, so when summer time comes along, we can show off our sexy, toned legs loud & proud.

2.)    When tanning on the beach, be sure to put on some sun screen beforehand (preferably with more than SPF15 and less than SPF90, just to be safe.) To prevent crazy tan lines while sun tanning, be sure your bikini does not have insane looking strings that are crisscrossing everywhere. It might be sexy and unique, but do you really want people to think that you’re still wearing that same “sexy & unique” bathing suit when you’re not wearing them anymore?

3.)    Summer is all about bold and fun colors, so don’t be afraid to wear bright colored lipsticks. (Bright pinks, reds, corals) Just make sure you don’t overdo it, otherwise, people might think you were either thrown back out by the 70’s or you work as a clown for a living.

4.)    For those who like to wear a liquid foundation on hot, humid summer days, be sure to put on a good face primer prior to application. After a few hours in the sun, it’s normal for you to feel like your make up or better yet, your face is melting off. To prevent that sticky icky, nasty feeling, bring along some facial/ setting spray. (I, personally use the Evian facial spray. It’s a multipurpose spray that can be used as a toner, a setting spray and also a facial spray. It can be found at Sephora) Not only will it set your makeup but it will keep your face cool & well hydrated.

5.)    Hats, fedoras and hair accessories are always a nice touch to make a simple and plain outfit, look like a BAMM! Make sure to try them on first before purchasing, because we all know that not all hats or fedoras look good on everyone. Who knows, a lighter colored fedora might not look right on you but a darker colored fedora just makes you look sexy? So, don’t give up so easily on your first try. Keep on trying other things until you find what suits you best.

Remember, summer fashion isn’t just for beach bums or fashion junkies, it is for everyone. We all have our inner fashionistas inside of us that are dying to get out.

Always stay hydrated & keep in mind that although we love the sun, the sun might not love us as much as we love it. So, protect your skin and prevent skin cancer! Always use sunscreen when going out ^^

Until next time fellow fashionistas! This is Nikki, signing off!
